 Fan Appreciation Night...recap
« Thread Started on Sept 9, 2008, 3:32pm »

Last night at Philips Arena was electric. The Dream staff did a great job with fan appreciation night. So a round of applause and pat on the back to the staff. Thanks to all of you!

For those that couldn't make it, here's a recap. Feel free to add anything that I miss if you were there also.
When the doors opened the first 3,000 fans were given a large poster of the team (reminds me of high school yearbook basketball pictures) along with Thundersticks and game program which featured the entire team (the locker room photo taken after our first win). Then there was a wine tasting event sponsored by Kroger for all season ticket holders. CSS was on hand giving away ticket holder lanyards and visors. The PGA golf people were there with a putting demo set-up. As usual "pigtail power" ponytail holders were given out. The Shooting Stars were of course on hand with music and dance. And as I soon found out all Dream merchandise was on sale for get this-- 50% off--great deal. A post-game autograph session was scheduled for all in attendance so there were maps showing the set-up so you had plenty of time to pick where you wanted to go first. As a fan with perfect attendance, myself and many others were escorted to the court where we took a group photo. And then the game started...

The players wore the Adidas i-design shirt designed by the Dream winner. The design was called "Reflection of a Dream" and it had the Atlanta skyline and it's reflection with the American flag in it with some fireworks going off in the sky and of course the Dream logo.

As soon as the first timeout was called the floodgates of prizes were opened. There were more contests than usual and a free-throw challenge was added into the mix--all 2nd place contestants received prizes so that was nice. Bags and bags of miniature stress basketballs were thrown out, they emptied the t-shirt vault throwing out a mixture of white, black and pink Dream t-shirts of various sizes. Then there were of course the mini basketballs and foam Frisbees. The half-time act was Quick Change (I think is their name). Apparently very popular at sporting events and they didn't disappoint. For most of the 3rd quarter and the entire 4th quarter it seemed every moment there was downtime the Shooting Stars were throwing stuff to the fans.

After the game Ivory, Betty and Jennifer gave "thank you" speeches to the fans and then out came some boxes of brand new basketball shoes. Each players grabbed a shoe and went around and threw it into the stands. And you'd think that was enough but they also threw out official basketballs that each had a players signature on them.

Then the players took a 10-minute break and re-appeared for the 1 hour long --yes, I said 1 full hour--autograph session. I was able to do all the player lines in about 40 minutes which was good considering the number of people who stayed. And while standing in Jennifer and Betty's line I happened to look over and noticed Kristen Mann (in jeans and a t-shirt) so, being a fan I had to get her attention and it paid off. I was able to get a picture with her, exchange a few comments and she signed my basketball (I now officially have the signatures of every Dream player). Also on hand was Teresa Edwards who graciously signed anything for anyone who went up to her and asked. WNBA players as a whole are very generous when it comes to signing items and they're much more available to the fans. The arena staff said no pictures but I saw Betty and Jennifer take the time to pose with a little girl, good stuff.

The game itself was great. Both teams played until the last second and both teams played well. But unfortunately we couldn't pull off the win. But the consensus was that although a win would have been nice, the fans appreciated the 110% effort given.

Once again a big thanks to the Dream staff. Hopefully every fan Appreciation Night in the future is as fun as this one was.
