Way to go Dream!! The team played 3rd quarters of defense. What is up with Nnameka?? The dream started to play some ball when the coach took out Young and Lennox. These two are ALL Stars at B No D. The dream started playing defense and played offense as a team and things started clicking. Young a mid major player is NOT a First Round player. No Defense, No Jumper and plays way to much. Girls Mid Major is not equal to the guys mid major. BIG Mistakes drafting this one. And What up with Nnameka? Great Defense, Very Good Jumper, and a lot Better than Young. Coach is trying justify her bad judgement picking Young in the first round. Lennox good player, but not a team player. She is all about her points per game, so when it is time for a new contract she can leave the ATL and get her B $. The Dream have a lot of wins in them, You just need to limit playing time for Young and Lennox and play great Defense Now What about Nnameka? Peace Out!!!

A real TEAM effort !! I've attended all of the home games and this was by far the best! GOOD line up coach. It just shows you can never give up. I had a sign that said "Atlanta Wins !!" I'll be there on 7/22 for the next home win.

Nnameka who? What has her contribution been??? Young had made huge contributions. She needs to work on her D but she's not a mistake.
Can you please post some background information on Nnameka?
Jaye, feel free to jump in if you have a view....

OK. I just checked the roster and remember who Nnameka is now. She played at GT. I remember seeing her play against my Tar Heels during the ACC season. She played in 3 games this season and scored 3 points. I would agree that she needs more playing time but she needs to earn those minutes and bring some offense. We desperately need to keep the momentum going with our scoring. We can have all of the defense in the world but won't win games without any offense. I wouldn't be so quick to take a shot at Young. She's been solid with her scoring. Lots of upside with Young. The coaches will help develop her D.

Most coaches will tell you defense win games not offense. You need a balanced team on the floor not alot of scorer that can't stop the other team. Playing team ball and playing defense is what gave them there first win. GO DREAM!

nnameka played fairly well in the preseason..... and showed real promise..... but when the regular season started she seemed to realize that she was actually playing pro ball against the best in the world..... and she started to look a little shook by the magnitude..... she had a couple of shakey games.... made the usual rookie mistakes..... and it seems landed squarely in meadors doghouse..... and hasn't played since.....
again..... she has game..... and promise..... but it can't develop sitting deep on the bench.... but she's not the ballplayer that young is......even playing at her best she doesn't have youngs strengths...... as always..... jmo....

Always good to see new people signing up for discussion. This thread is a celebration of our historic first victory, so if you want to talk about your disagreement on the choice of Young, why Nnamaka isn't playing more, etc., you should create a new topic. But, since you've already posted here, I'll respond to some of your comments. Young is a good player with a ton of potential and MM saw it at predraft camp. She is not perfect--I wish her shot would fall more often and wish she could hang onto the loose balls more--but she rebounds well and has come through more than once in clutch situations. I disagree with you on her defense...she is usually on the opponent's high scorer and that person always has to fight for their points when TY is involved...sometimes they get them, sometimes they do not. Remember that it was Izi who had the starting slot, and then she went to Brazil, and so Young had to step in. Despite the rough patch of the last two games (Young, Latta and Lennox) Young has since earned her starting spot and now it is up to Izi or someone else to take it away. I also think that Young is NOT playing like a mid-major school player at all. She has come in and played vs. the best and has shown that despite her coming from a mid-major, she has stepped up and done a good job, all that while having the pressure of the "she's the 8th pick from a mid-major" bulls-eye on her back. As for Nnamaka, I do hope she gets some more playing time so that she has a chance to show what she can do i.e. Strother, Haynie...maybe with all the recent subbing MM has been doing, she'll get more of a chance. This thread is about our victory so WOOHOO for the ATL Dream!! As has already been said the players came to play and it paid off. This is exactly what we need to continue our success, more players stepping up and showing us why they're in the WNBA. I'm proud of Haynie for stepping up, keeping her cool and making some nice plays. And I'm proud of Strother for coming thru the last couple games and I'm proud of the team as a whole. As far as the comment about Lennox being all about points and us needing to trade her...yes she hasn't been consistent all season long but until the past week not enough of our bench players had been stepping up so she was doing what she could...Trading her would NOT be the answer. Afoundingfan and others have already touched on the Nnamaka issue. I like the idea about a DVD I'd love to watch that game again (even though I'm a founding fan I'd be willing to pay for it )...Saturday's game was exhilarating. Chicago played us hard...we earned our W.

Seasonofdreams: Welcome to the boards. Since Jaye has been targeted as being too confrontational at times, I'll take the liberty to respond to your original post.
While I wasn't fond of the Dream picking Tamera Young with the #8 pick, I think she has played very well through 18 games. She leads the Dream in rebounding (since DeSouza's injury). She hustles, triggers turnovers, and is consistent to be a rookie in this league. You are wrong about her defense. She has been probably the most solid defender on the team. She has guarded each team's leading scorer and has done a pretty good job. Young's jumper is not perfect (she needs more arc and follow through), but she gets it done more times than not.
The fact that you can indict a female athlete coming from a mid-major is asinine. What makes you think mid-major male athletes are better? Is it the fact that they get drafted more often and a huge deal is made about it? Whatever the reason is, I think that was a ridiculous thing to say. One could argue that a mid-major player will never compare to a D1 player. That would be dumb in certain instances as well. If an athlete can play basketball, it doesn't matter if the player is male or female or from a mid-major.
As for Nnameka - "Great Defense, very good jumper, and a lot better than Young." In what world are you living in? I watched Nnameka throughout her entire collegiate career. I never thought she would have even been drafted in the WNBA. She can shoot the 3, but she is very inconsistent. She was in college for sure. When she was on, Tech rode her to victory. When she was off, you could almost chalk it up as a loss. She never played great defense. She might be a decent jumper, but Young is the best jumper on our team. After seeing Young for 18 games and Nnameka for 4 years, Young is by far more athletic, talented, and more deserving of being on the court. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Nnameka play more, but she has to earn it. When she gets in the game, she is often tentative and hesitant to shoot. Perhaps she might consider defense as her way of getting more playing time.
As for Betty Lennox - Find the thread started on her since we have dealt with this previously. We have all complained about her shooting. But to limit the playing time of one of the top 7 scorers in the league is to guarantee we can't score enough points to stay in a game. We need everybody to contribute offensively and defensively. Whether we played defense 3 quarters the other night or not, we still won. It was a well deserved win.
Hopefully, the team realizes what it takes to win games - defense first and then scoring from more than 3 people. Having 6 players score in double figures every night means we could be .500 the rest of the season as long as we play solid defense.
I hope you get a chance to watch the Dream more than the one game you commented on. We have a ton of potential and hopefully we will put the pieces together to travel in the right direction even if it means having Lennox and Young on the court more than you like.

Ahhhhhhhhhh...did you just return from Mars?? "No Jumper"..she is in the top 10 jumpers in the league. At the interview with fans before th PHX game Lobo or Peck referred to Young as the "steal of the draft." If the draft were held tomorrow there is a good chance she would go as high as #4...she has that much potential.

Now that we have won our first game, we should continue to work hard and win more. Don't put us down, we need encouragement.
