www.madrid2008.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/08/olymqual/wom/news/lateNews/p/newsid/25736/FE_news_lateNews_arti.htmlThe relevant segment: In a dramatic last contest, Brazil captain Iziane refused to enter the game in the second half following a heated discussion during the intermission with coach Paulo Bassul. He later revealed that he has dropped her from the national team.
“I don’t have anyway out,” Paulo Bassul, the Brazil coach said. The Belarus team beat Brazil in the first match of the Qualifying Bracket. This loss was critical, as it kept Brazil from automatically qualifying for the Olympics in women's basketball. Now, Brazil must win the next two games to qualify, or wait another four years. To say I'm shocked is an understatement. It looks like Izi will be on her way back to Atlanta real soon, barring the two sides coming together and burying the hatchet. But I'm concerned. Do we really need a player who will refuse to play if she feels slighted? --Pet

Yes, we really want and need Izzi. We don't know what was said in that heated exchange. Don't make any assumptions without knowing the true facts. As far as I know, Izzi does not have a history of being a hot head. Something went terribly wrong and I won't blame Izzi for that without having factual information. That article didn't reveal the true nature of what occured. My first assumption is that the coach (not Izzi) might have screwed up - JMO.
I don't ever recall reading any negative stories about Izzy (in US or Brazil) so she's innocent until proven guilty of any wrongdoing.
Hopefully the truth will emerge soon...

Izi is supposedly on her way back to Atlanta on Sunday, according to the Brazilian press. --Pet Pet: I just caught up on the story on the Rebkell thread. I honestly don't know what to think now. Sounds like she got emotional and made a bad decision. Does she deserve a second chance? Absolutely. Everybody makes mistakes in life. She deserves a chance to redeem herself. When I read her comment about being criticized her entire life in Brazil, it really made me feel bad for her. I hope that the city of Atlanta and the Dream staff just embrace her upon her return. She needs emotional support right now not judgment. It also sounds like there is just bad chemistry between Izi and the coach. That's tough to work through.

I agree. The last thing that Izi needs to be reminded of by the fans in her time in Madrid. After something bad like that happens, what most people want is a fresh start. And according to Izi, she never got along with Bassul.
I'll definitely be cheering her on.

Surprising considering she was probably the best player on that team. Although to most coaches that doesn't matter. Bill Laimbeer didn't mind sitting Swin in the middle of the playoffs (I'm not saying she was the best player on the Shock, but she was obviously a key player).
This is sure to help the Dream though. I think that, had Izi not played for the national team and Desouza not gotten injured, the Dream would've won a game by now.

I'm not concerned about this incident so much as I only hope that it doesn't happen w/the Dream.

afoundingfan: I don't think you have to worry about a repeat of that incident in ATL. Let's give Izi a chance. I think everyone in ATL will be surprised at her production if she's embraced by the city and her team. For me this isn't so much about "we need her" as it is about giving a young lady who is passionate about playing basketball "clean slate" -- GO IZI!
I don't know how you all feel but I find it empowering as a woman and a woman of color to see other women excel in sports. GO WNBA! GO DREAM!!!

I am happy to have her back but that must have been some heated discussion for her to have to stand so strongly for her point of view. WOW
