I don't see a dedicated thread for this so I decided to go ahead and make one.
So far in the Eastern Conference:
N.Y. and Detroit are playing differently than I thought they would in the sense that they are keeping it very close. It's obvious though that J-Mac is the key to N.Y.'s inside game. She makes passes and shots that other players her size just don't make. During game 2 Detroit began to shut her down in the second half and forced more turnovers so if they start doing that from the start tonight during game 3, N.Y. will have to rely on Battle, Willis and Carson to step up and make more of their shots. They can shoot, they just need to be patient in finding a shot without allowing time to run out on them. On the defensive end N.Y. cannot allow Nolan and Smith the opportunity to put up tons of 3's. And if Pierson plays again N.Y.'s post players have to keep a body on her.
On the Detroit side Nolan and smith kept the team in game 1. Having Pierson gone back for game 2 was very important. She made some inside shots Detroit couldn't get to during game 1 along with pulling down rebounds. Nolan and Smith's shooting percentage has been down, yet they pulled off a win. Also, Detroit was able to get to the line more during game 2 which helped.
It seems the 4th quarters have been the key to games 1 & 2. If game 3 plays out the about the same thru 3 quarters N.Y. will have to step up and make every possession count and on defense give attention to Nolan and Smith on the outside, Pierson and McWilliams-Franklin on the inside. On the other side of the coin Detroit can play the same as they've been playing and simply step up shots made and win. Or they need to shut J-Mac down early and Nolan can go 7-22 again and win.
Over in the Western Conference:
This has already been decided: SASS 2008 Western Conference Champions! I'll skip to the good stuff. Becky Hammon never ceases to amaze me with the shots she can get to go down (I wouldn't go as far as to call myself a Hammonite, but she's one of the players I really enjoy watching). That along with her 3-pt skills are a huge reason for the game 3 win. Now let's talk about the buzzer-beating 1.3 second game winning shot from Sophia Young. "CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT WENT IN??" I'm pretty sure that went through the heads of everyone watching that game. All I have to say is if you missed that game, you missed out big. Sophia Young was on it in game 2 and game back late in game 3. But I can't end this without giving L.A. respect. Parker, Milton-Jones, Leslie, Masciadri, Johnson and Ferdinand-Harris played great. I have to say Bobbit didn't have the PG experience needed (shot clock violation in game 2 was big) and SASS were able to throw off the games of Leslie and Parker and even put Leslie into foul trouble in game 3. The big 3 just weren't enough. Great games to watch though.
So far the finals have been exciting to watch. The WNBA told us to Expect Great and that's what we've been getting. I'm going to miss game 3 tonight so someone else can give us the recap. Now I have to go make plans for the game 1 finals party here in ATL.
